DELEGATE NICK CHARLES SCHOLARSHIP

District 25 Residents and Scholars,

I wish you the best of luck in your academic endeavors as we navigate this new year. Below is the information for my 2023-2024 Delegate Nick Charles Scholarship. Please read carefully and follow the link to complete the application.

THE 2023-2024 APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN.

WHO MAY APPLY: All Maryland residents residing in Maryland Legislative District 25 attending a college, university, trade school or equivalent in the State of Maryland are eligible for the House of Delegates Scholarship. Current high school seniors and full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate students, and students attending a private career school may apply.

ARE YOU A DISTRICT 25 RESIDENT: Follow the link, type in your address, look to see if you are in Legislative District 25. If you are not, it will show you who your Senator and Delegates are. Their contact information is accessible through the hyperlinks. Clink link: mdelect.net

HOW TO APPLY: Please scroll down. You should also complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you haven’t done so already.

You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time (12+ credits per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits per semester), degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student, or attend certain private career schools. Students attending out-of-state schools are welcome to apply, but in order to receive a scholarship award, the intended major or program of study must be unique to the out-of-state school and not available at any Maryland institution.

ESSAY TOPIC: You should address your opinions on Guaranteed Basic Income.

  • How beneficial, if at all, would a GBI program be to Prince George’s County and to Maryland?

  • If you do not believe that GBI programs would benefit communities in Maryland, please explain why.

  • If Delegate Charles were to introduce legislation to establish a GBI program, who would comprise your demographic  target group of need and why?  And, how do you believe that this additional, unconditional income and potential economic freedom, would benefit them?

DEADLINES: Complete and submit my 2023-2024 Del. Nick Charles Scholarship Application by Wednesday, June 1, 2023 at 11:59PM.

ELIGIBILE MAJORS: All majors are eligible for scholarships. Students with a “unique major” may be eligible for a scholarship to an out-of-state school, pending approval by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Majors are considered to be unique when they are not offered at any Maryland university or college. To verify unique major status, students must complete the Unique Major Application and submit it to the Higher Education Commission with the required documentation.

AWARD AMOUNT: The minimum annual award is $1,000 and may be held with all State awards. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students. Awards are not automatically renewed. You must re-apply each year to your delegate(s).

Due to the amount of scholarship request, this is a competitive scholarship application. Your essay will be reviewed by our scholarship committee and selected for award. The writer of the top essay will receive a $2,000 scholarship award and will get to work with my office to author their recommendations into law.
