District 25 Residents and Scholars,

I hope you all are staying safe and your spirits are up as we get through this COVID-19 Pandemic. For my graduating seniors, I am so sorry this is happening during what is supposed to the most memorable year of your life. We will all get through this together and how you all get through this will show you just how strong you are. I know you all are a resilient bunch who can see it through any obstacle that comes before you. If you haven’t heard of the poem “See It Through”, click the link and take a look at it. It is very inspirational, and will speak to your journey.

Current high school seniors and full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate students, and students attending a private career school may apply.

HOW TO APPLY: Follow this link or scroll below to complete my 2021-2022 Del. Nick Charles Scholarship Application. You must also complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you haven’t done so already.

You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time (12+ credits per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits per semester), degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student, or attend certain private career schools. Students attending out-of-state schools are welcome to apply, but in order to receive a scholarship award, the intended major or program of study must be unique to the out-of-state school and not available at any Maryland institution.

ESSAY TOPIC: This past legislative session the media stated "Maryland passes historic police reform legislation". You should address in your essay your feelings on what's happening across the nation with police brutality; if you or anyone you know has been subject to police brutality or profiling personally; a breakdown on if you believe the legislature got the reform bills right and why; and finally your recommendations to fix the system if you believe the legislature did not meet your expectations of police accountability. (Detailed information on legislation can be found by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the page)

DEADLINES: Complete and submit my 2021-2022 Del. Nick Charles Scholarship Application by Tuesday June 1, 20201 at 11:59PM.

ELIGIBILE MAJORS: All majors are eligible for scholarships. Students with a “unique major” may be eligible for a scholarship to an out-of-state school, pending approval by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Majors are considered to be unique when they are not offered at any Maryland university or college. To verify unique major status, students must complete the Unique Major Application and submit it to the Higher Education Commission with the required documentation.

AWARD AMOUNT: The minimum annual award is $1,000 and may be held with all State awards. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students. Awards are not automatically renewed. You must re-apply each year to your delegate(s).

Due to the amount of scholarship request, this is a competitive scholarship application. Your essay will be reviewed by our scholarship committee and selected for award. The writer of the top essay will receive a $2,000 scholarship award and will get to work with my office to author their recommendations into law.
